ImageWASHINGTON, Sept. 15 (KUNA) -- Two days after Hurricane Ike roared through Houston, Texas, forcing thousands to evacuate and head for emergency shelters, the death toll from the storm rose to 30 in eight states, officials reported on Monday.

Many of the victims lived far north of the U.S. Gulf Coast, but were caught up in the trail of flooding that swept across the U.S. Midwest as Ike was downgraded to a tropical storm as it moved well inland.

Houston, home to the fourth-largest U.S. metropolitan area, remained littered with glass from skyscrapers. The city was placed under a weeklong curfew, and millions of its residents still had no power on Monday.
