ImageWASHINGTON, Sept. 15 (KUNA) -- With his once big lead in the polls evaporated, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama had one major piece of good news to announce -- his campaign raised a record 66 million dollars in August, topping its previous high mark and running well ahead of his Republican rival, John McCain.

More than half a million new Obama donors contributed last month, when Senator Obama accepted his party's presidential nomination and announced Senator Joe Biden as his running mate. The campaign reported more than 77 million dollars in cash on hand at the end of August, compared with about 66 million dollars in July.

The Illinois senator's previous monthly donation record of 55 million dollars came in February during his Democratic primary campaign against New York Senator Hillary Clinton.
